Ethan had a very exciting birthday. We started his birthday weekend off right with a hike up Mudon Mountain. It was about a 4 hour hike to the top of the mountain. We went with six friends, Whit, Lindsay, Angie, Chris, Jose, and En Suk. We had a wonderful picnic near the top (thanks to Jose's mom, who sent Jose with enough Korean food for an army).
It was a surprisingly mild day, but by the time we got near the top, I was glad I had on 3 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, hat, scarf, and 2 pairs of socks. There was a huge group of Korean hikers at the top shouting congratulatory words to us when we arrived at the top. The way down was traitorous. We slid, rather than walked down a frozen trail for about 45 minutes. Thankfully, we made it out with no major damage.
The frozen part of the trail really slowed us down. Unknown to Ethan, we had planned a quite elaborate surprise party for him that was set to start 2 hours after we returned from the mountain. Angie, Lindsay, and I rushed around making preparations for Ethan's party as Ethan hit the bath house with Whit and Chris.

I searched all of Gwangju for a charcoal grill for Ethan's birthday present. I finally found a small one, which was just perfect. So, we had a summer-themed barbecue surprise party. Our braver party-goers dressed in summer clothes, and then put on jacket to grill out on the roof (just outside our window). Ethan might not have been completely surprised, but he said the party was party was perfect.

Ethan felt right at home cooking out for the party! Here he is, happy to be putting his headlamp to use for the first time in Korea.

Happy late birthday E-Dawg. Sounded like a good time. I'm proud of you for grillin' out (charcoal, of course) in style. Wish we could have been there.
Hope you guys are doing well, and we'll try to catch up with you soon.
Carrie says hi, LuLu says woof.
