So a lot has happened since the last update. Sorry that is my bad! I have not made a post for a long time.(ethan) So lets see we had our summer vacation, maria had her clothing exchange, its been really hot, and we have less than two months in Korea. So that's everything in a nut shell but let me elaborate a little more for you.
SUMMER VACATION was a long awaited break from work. It was well needed and Maria and I took full advantage of our time off. As you all know Korea is a smaller country so it is pretty easy to get from one side to the other. It takes about five hours from east to west and about ten hours from south to north. So having just weekends to fill our travels with, it is hard to cover all of the places we want to see. So having three days off and the weekend we thought why not travel to the far north east of the country. I had read about a beautiful National Park in that area of Korea. It was one of the last things on my list of places to see while in Korea. So we took a bus early Wednesday morning. It took about eight hours after all said and done. The mountains are a little bigger up north and into North Korea, don't worry we stayed in the south.
We made it to the camp ground outside Seoraksan National Park. It was our first official camp ground in Korea. I liked it, they had a few roads through with shows and bathrooms scattered around. But it was basically a field and there were no designated areas to put up a tent you just fended for yourself. Koreans know how to do it right. I don't think we have a picture but I will try to paint one for you. They basically brought there house with them. Usually they had a large tent, sometimes two and then a huge rain fly/tarp over there whole operation. Very professionally done, and then there was us next to them. A tiny two man, actually a one and a half man tent. It was pretty funny.
To get to the park we hopped on the bus and rode it into the park. The park was really awesome, with waterfalls, mountains, a cable car, temples, and a huge Buddha. First we checked out the Buddha and then went for a short hike with a lot of beautiful waterfalls. It was really nice. Then after working up an appetite we got some bipimbop at a restaurant in the middle of the woods. Bipimbop is rice with some cooked and fresh veggies and they have a chili sauce to put on it. Maria said it was the best she had every had, it was really good.
After a belly full of food we thought it would be a good idea to hike to the top of this mountain with these rock chimnies at the top. It was a long strenuous hike but it was well worth it in the end. Check out the pictures we were above the clouds.
Our trip was full of adventures and just a great time to see a new part of our beautiful creation. We got to spend good time with our friends Whit and Lindsay. They went with us on a amazing trail full of waterfalls and beautiful pools of crystal blue water.
We took the train back which was nice, it took nine hours but we went through some really pretty scenery. We had a great time and going back to work that Monday I felt like I was a little happy to be there and motivated. It is amazing what a little vacation does for people.
If you where wondering why in some of the pictures there is barbed wire along the beach, well that is so North Korea doesn't try to get into South Korea by sea. At night they have big lights that light up the beach. It was pretty surreal. Well hope you are all doing well and enjoy the Olympics.
